Sankofa Tumi

Sankofa is an Akan word from the Ghanaian Akan people that translates to "go back and fetch it." The phrase is derived from the words:
  • San = return
  • Ko = go
  • Fa = (look, see, take)
The Sankofa bird is known for having its feet planted forward while its head is turned backwards and gently holding an egg in its mouth. The egg represents the 'gems' or knowledge of the past upon which wisdom is based and the generation to come that would benefit from that wisdom. The Akan people believe that learning from the past is a guide for the future. That is, we should reach back and gather the best of what our past has taught us and what we can achieve out of full potential as we move forward. The wisdom, values, morals, and rituals that are gained from our Ancestors will ensure a stronger future for us now and those to come.

When the word "tumi," which means "power," is added, "sankofa tumi" can now be translated to "return to power." This is understood to mean that knowledge and wisdom from the past has the power to move us forward when we learn it. We will understand we have always had the power to go back and get what was forgotten, or left behind, and to continue moving forward with our future. It is our practice to lift as we climb. That takes POWER!
